I knew I wanted to create an original barbecue sauce for Bread & With It because barbecue season is upon us. What is barbecue season without your family signature barbecue sauce? It’s what defines you as a barbecue chef!
We brought out our fairly nice charcoal barbecue that we love and after a year of living outside it was due for a cleaning and seasoning. The flavor we get from cooking charcoal versus gas is really enjoyable. It’s almost as good as cooking over a fire pit when we go camping; which always gives me that sense of primal satisfaction 😀 UUUH UUUH MAN MAKE FIRE!
Anyway… while my husband was on the back deck giving the barbecue a good scrubbing and seasoning I started working on the original barbecue sauce. I started by figuring out the basics of how barbecue sauce is made and stumbled across this guy in a 1964 Metropolitan Cookbook (below). I really fell in love with all the little food characters throughout this book. By turning to an older cookbook I was able to find out basically how barbecue sauce is made and then I started creating from there. I added a little here and there until the flavor was just right and altered the cooking time to make the sauce nice and thick.
The result was a wonderfully thick and smooth sweet barbecue sauce. I love how it’s not an overpowering sweet but rather delicate. When slathered over our chicken legs it didn’t overpower the flavor of the chicken but rather complimented it. It was truly wonderful!

- 1 cup Ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons Vinegar
- 1 tablespoons Molasses
- 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- dash Pepper
- Combine all ingredients in a 1 pint saucepan
- Bring to a boil
- Reduce head; simmer uncovered 30 minutes until desired consistency is reached
- Refrigerate after use
